My hope is that, for anyone reading this who leads a team, you’re already familiar with the concept of employee engagement. But since a refresher never hurt anyone, allow me to share my definition of employee engagement:
the emotional commitment an employee has to his/her/their organization
Disengaged workers take less responsibility and ownership of their attitude, behavior, and motivation, and drain overall productivity. Low employee engagement costs U.S. companies $500 billion (yes, that’s billion with a B) each year, while companies with a highly engaged workforce are 21% more profitable and 17% more productive than those with lower engagement. The last and scariest stat I’ll leave you with is this one: engaged employees only comprise 15% of the workforce. Tell me that doesn’t elicit a “holy sh*t!”
So what’s the easiest way to boost the engagement of your employees? By investing in their development! I lead facilitated discussions and workshops that help teams and groups better understand each other’s different perspectives, find shared goals, effectively navigate “challenging” conversations, and come to strong resolutions.
